The GDTC would like to thank everyone for participating in the 34th edition of the Kids Summer Fun Run Series.
We are proud to offer such a great experience for the youth and also provide much needed food to the less fortunate in our area. We truly enjoy doing this and it is an expression of what our club is all about and that is to promote running at all level and experience.
If you enjoyed the series please feel free to spread the word about the series to all your friends, family or whomever you feel may benefit from what we are trying to accomplish.

Week 1 - June 25
The sun finally came out for over 273 children to race the Greater Derry Track Clubs 34th annual Kids Summer Fun Run held at Pinkerton Academy Track in Derry. Donations of a nonperishable food products are requested each of the 7 week series to help restock the local food banks. The first week 258 pounds of food were taken to St. Thomas's Food Pantry in Derry.
The children are lead in stretching exercises and given running tips by the Greater Derry Track Club members. The 2-3 year olds run 50 meters, 4-6 year old run 200meters, 7-8 year old run 300meters, 9-10 year old run the 600 meters and the 11-13 year old run the cross country mile. Older than 14 year old run the open mile on the track, bringing out local high school elite runners.
Children receive participation ribbons each week supplied by the Derry Recreation Department. Water and Gatorade and watermelon are supplied each week. Runners who complete the series will receive medals and T-shirts from GDTC. This week’s winners are:

Week 2 - July 2nd
The fun runs were cancelled due to thunderstorms and heavy rain.
Week 3 - July 9th
The Greater Derry Track Club Kids Summer Fun Runs continued on July 9, 2009 after having a rain out on July 3, 2009. The sun came out for the occasion as well as 176 new registrants for the series. This brings the total of participants to 449 children. The Pinkerton tack was very active with many children running various distances for green participation ribbons supplied by the Derry Recreation Department. Watermelon, Gatorade and water were available for all the runners. The participants bring nonperishable food items to restock the local food kitchen. This week's total is 353 pounds of food. The Kids Summer Fun Run has now donated 611 pounds in just two weeks.

Week 4 - July 17th
The humid air and threatening skies did not keep 62 more children from signing up for the Kids Summer Fun Runs. Pinkerton Track was hopping with children running various distances based on their age at 6:30 pm. Over the three nights of runs, 511 children have participated. All that is asked is a nonperisible food item each week to help restock the food pantry in town. The KSFR brought in 224 pounds of food tonight. This brings the total amount donated to 835 pounds of food to St. Thomas’s food pantry. Many smiles were seen on both parents and children as they ran around the track or cross country trail.10 seedless watermelons were gobbled up by all the runners after their races. Join us next week at Pinkerton Track 6:00 registrations, 6:30 races and bring a food item. Only three more races left weather permitting.

Week 5 - July 23rd
Under threatening skies and predictions of heavy rain, the fifth night of the KSFR was able to be completed at Pinkerton Track before a drop came down. 48 more registrations signed up, to bring the total of 559 participants. The runners came though for the local food pantry adding another 210pounds for donation tonight. So far the series has donated 1045 pounds of food. The 2-3 year olds ran 50 yards across the football field. The 4-5-6 year olds ran 200 meters (half way around the track) for their ribbons and watermelon. The 7 and 8 year olds ran 300meters (3/4 way around the track) and watched the clock for their times. The 9 and 10 year olds run 600 meter (1.5 times around the track) and are logged in for place. The 11-12-13 year olds run a cross country mile. Each age category is logged for place. Based on place and participation awards will be given to 9-13 year olds on the last day of the series.

Week 6 - July 30th
Under clear blue skies, the sixth evening in the series of Kids Summer Fun Runs was again well attended at the Pinkerton Track. 56 more children signed up tonight this bring the total up to 600. The weather was beautiful, after an ugly morning, it was another great night for running. The Derry Recreation Department donates ribbons for all the participants and the 9-13 year olds results are tracked during the 7-week series. Greater Derry Track Club donates the watermelon and the runners to stretch out the children. Remember next Thursday Aug 6th, is the last day. All participants will get medals and tshirts. Must be present to claim. The boys and girls between 9 and 13 will get special prizes, a points system based on their overall performance will be used to determine the first 3 in age group/gender. 2-3 year olds run 50meters across the width of the football field; 4-6 run 200 meters ( ½ way around the track); 7-8 year olds run 300 meters ( ¾ way around the track) ; 9-10 year olds run 600 meters (1 ½ way around the track); 11-13 year old run the cross country mile through the woods ; 14 and up run the 1600meter 4 laps around the track (open mile) The food that the children bring to the track is donated to St. Thomas’s food pantry. The food stays in the community that supports it. Thank you for your generosity. This week we brought in 228 pounds of food. We have collected 1273 pounds of food so far. Keep those nonperishable food items coming.
