The GDTC would like to thank everyone for participating in the 36th edition of the Kids
Summer Fun Run Series.
We are proud to offer such a great experience for the youth and also provide much needed food to
the less fortunate in our area. We truly enjoy doing this and it is an expression of what our club
is all about and that is to promote running at all level and experience.
If you enjoyed the series please feel free to spread the word about the series to all your friends,
family or whomever you feel may benefit from what we are trying to accomplish.
Also feel free to send us any comments about your experience, we listen. Send us an email

Any other suggestions will be listened to and if you want to continue your running experience consider
joining our club.

After a cancelation due to unhealthy air and excessive heat warning the final Kids Summer
Fun Run was held on a beautiful running evening. 69 more runners signed up for the program.
This brings the total for the series to784. The total count for food donated this final week
was 520 pounds bringing the total amount donated to the St. Thomas Food Bank in Derry to 1807
pounds for the series. Thank you goes out to The Derry Recreation Department for the thousands
of ribbons donated to the program. Thank you to Pinkerton Academy for the use of the track and
bathrooms. Thank you to all the GDTC volunteers that make this program a success every year. Thank
you to Shaws and Market Basket for donation of some of the 48 watermelons that were cut up for the
runners to enjoy. Thank you all the runners of the series for coming out and parents for bringing
the children out to run. Participants finished with a medal and T-Shirt compliments of the GDTC.

Week 1 - June 23

Week 2 - June 30
|
June 23, 2011 was rained out for the start of the Kids Summer Sun Run Series. This did not stop 458 children
signing up for fun runs they and brought 446 pounds of food to be donated to the St. Thomas food pantry.
Members of the Greater Derry Track club lead stretching exercises and offer running tips. Every one is a
winner. 2-3 year olds run maybe 50 yards. 4-6 year old run 200m, 7-8 year olds run 300m, 9-10 year olds run
600m, 11-13 year old run the cross country mile and 14 and older run the open mile. Everyone gets a
participation ribbon complements of the Derry Recreation Department. Water and Gatorade and watermelons
are supplied each week. The end of the series prizes and medals are given for participation. This week's

Week 3 - July 7
|
On July 7, 2011 with wonderful running weather another 155 kids signed up to run the
Kids Summer Fun Runs. This brings the total up to 613 children enjoying the Thursday
evening running races where everyone is a winner. The children donate a non perishable
food item that is brought to St.Thomas Food Pantry. This week 417 pounds of food was
donated. This brings the total, up to 863 pounds of food with three weeks yet to go.
The Kids Summer Fun Runs are held at Pinkerton Academy Track with registration at 6:00
and running races start at 6:30. The GDTC stretch the kids out and give running tips
and each age group runs various distances on the track and cross country mile. Everyone
gets participation ribbons and watermelon, water and Gatorade are available. The only
request is a nonperishable food item each week to help restock the food pantry in our
community. Run just one week or the entire series. Kids bring their parents to
challenge the open mile.

Week 4 - July 14th
|
|
The weather was great for the local runners coming out to Pinkerton Track for a healthy
run and watermelon. 102 more children signed up today to bring the total up to 715
participants over the 6 weeks of races. Donations from Shaws provided 12 watermelons
that were cut up for the participants. The participants continue to bring in more food
for St. Thomas's food pantry in Derry. This week's total was 424 pounds of food bringing
the total up to 1287 pounds so far this summer. We will need to continue to bring in
nonperishable food items over the next 2 weeks to donate "a ton of food" to St. Thomas. July
28, 2011 will be the last week of the series and all runners will receive an award for
participation.
